How To Wear Sneakers With A Dress
Gone are the days when you’re putting on a dress because you’re dressing up for a particular event or occasion. Nowadays, you can throw on a dress with a pair of sneakers and still look just as stylish.
Sure, you’re not going to pair your dress with a beat up pair of sneakers or your go-to pair you put on when getting down and dirty.
To pull off this look, you’re still aiming to achieve a polished, chic yet put together look. Any style sneaker can work - athletic, fashionable sneakers to your slip-on’s. There are a few guidelines to follow to seamlessly pull off this style and avoid feeling like you threw your look together.
Rule #1: Avoid Shapeless If You’re Going Long
Disguising your frame underneath a loose or oversized fit paired with flats can create a frumpy look. Especially if you are petite. Instead, opt for a style that accentuates your waistline like a wrap style or tie waist (like the below dress).
I am on the petite side, 5’3; with super long legs. Choosing a maxi dress that has a tie waist help to create shape for me. Click here to shop this dress. I also love this floral maxi dress, it has a tie waist to help create curves and a proportionate look.
Rule #2: Avoid Clunky Sneakers
In my opinion, clunky sneakers completely take away from a stylish look. The attention goes directly to the shoes, and they make your look feel sloppy or thrown together. A simple or stacked sole is your best bet.
Rule #3: Add A Feminine Touch
Adding a “girly” touch to your look will help dress up your sneakers a bit. This can be done through a variety of things; like a feminine print, the material, color choice to your accessories.
The style of my dress, with the deep v-neck help to achieve that for my look. Along with the jewelry and bag.
Rule #4: Avoid Piling On Layers If Styling A Loose Or Oversized Fit
This rule is case-by-case depending on the details of your outfit and your height.
For a petite frame, if choosing a loose fit and long dress avoid layering with a loose or oversized layer. And instead, opt for a fitted style that does not hit below your waistline. It’ll help create a proportionate look. If selecting a dress with a shorter hemline, then a longer outer-layer paired with sneakers would work.
If you’re over 5’5, tread carefully if layering a loose maxi dress with a loose or oversized layer. Make sure the maxi dress shows off your frame to pull off this combination.
Rule #5: Use Add-On’s To Polish Up Your Look
Allow your choice in outerwear and accessories to add a dressier touch or complement it with casual pieces. Your add-on pieces play the role of dressing up or dressing down your look.
